Theme vs. Concept

Wednesday, November 11, 2009

Is it strange for me to blog about other wedding planners? I hope not because this post is going to a be an unabashed love letter to Jesi Haack and an article she wrote for Los Angeles Style Unveiled this past weekend.

Let me preface this by saying that I am really not a competitive person. Scratch that. I can be VERY competitive, but mostly with myself. I set high expectations for myself and get very frustrated when perfection isn't met by my 200% efforts. However, when it comes to being in an industry with other professionals, I am more interested in creating relationships than rivalries. I strive for the "bettering" of a whole community (like the wedding industry and it's styles and standards), rather than the "bettering" of just me as an individual. It excites and inspires me when I see others creating new insights, making new moves and growing new ventures. To be honest, I may think, "I wish I had thought of that!" but it is always immediately followed by, "How can I learn from that!"  So, even if it seems counter-productive for me to praise the work of other planners on my blog, I have to be myself and be true to sharing the things/people I love. And come on! I know who I am, where I am and how much I can grow. We all have different talents to offer and people to work with. Hooray for a wedding industry that actually practices love!

Now, on to the article... ;)

If you are a bride struggling with what kind of "theme" you want for your wedding, why not consider the "concept" instead? I know this article can already help clarify things for a few of my current brides. Jesi definitely hit the nail on the head with this one. And it's no wonder, considering the lovely weddings she designs! Like this last one shot by the lovely Sarah K. Chen

The article definitely brings up some interesting topics for us to chat about over our next "date" together! What do you think? I would love to hear your thoughts!

Word to everything.

For me theme vs. concept works like this:

Theme = literal = child
Concept = abstract = adult

I have always wince when someone says wedding theme.

for sure... themes themselves are not too bad. I think trying too hard to make everything fit under the theme is when things start getting a little nacho cheesy.
