Inspiration Boards

Wednesday, March 31, 2010

With all of the amazing images we come across on the web today, it has become second nature to right-click and save-image-as, directly into our file folders of "love," "like," and "have to have."  I am all for creating digital mood boards and inspiration boards and do this for many of my brides, events and shoots. However, I am even MORE for creating an inspiration board out of tangible elements that have texture, beauty and personal significance. And when it comes to "real-life" inspiration boards, my motto is - the bigger the better!

sorry. I saved this but not the source. Please share if you know!

sourceless image here too. boo.

And here is a look at my own inspiration board. I promised Lucia from Utterly Engaged a peek a while back, so I thought I would share with you all. It is a hodgepodge of things I like to look at, things I have worked with and saved, and things I would like to work with in the future.

This is an image of the entire board. I bought a frame at Michael's when it was on sale and some dark brown cork pieces, which I cut to size and hot glued to each other and then to the frame. The bottom right is covered because it is my wedding calendar and has all the names of my brides and grooms and the dates of their wedding, which I feel like is a little private. But I will share that I have 19 weddings booked for this year! woot!

Close-up of the middle top. From left to right: pattern by Olive Hue Paper for our Valentine's Day shoot,  "Will Work for Art" button that I bought from Gallery Nucleus and my dog chewed up, one of my fave linens from BBJ linens,  letter-pressed RSVP from samples I collected when we were planning our wedding and were considering having orange and pink as our colors, extra buttons that came with one of my Anthro jackets.

Close-up of the upper left corner. Clockwise from upper left: swatch of a fabric that I LOVE but have not decided how to use, clipping from the recent Martha Stewart Weddings magazine of Audrey Hepburn's quote (I believe in pink, I believe in kissing, kissing a lot and I believe that happy girls are the prettiest), another small glimpse at the BBJ linen, a card letterpressed by Snow & Graham, green floral hair pin by Oh, Hello, Friend!, a tag that came with my rehearsal dinner dress which was from BCBG's runway collection (I like the stitching and screen-printed type), a button for raffy (a musician I don't really know, but I liked her buttons), pink Admit One tickets from a huge roll I bought for $3 but never used, the cover for Priscilla Ahn's EP album (one of my FAVE musicians), which she signed for me when we went to see her start her residency at the Hotel Cafe.

Close-up of the middle right. Bouquet image from an old bridal magazine (I am not normally a rose-person but I love the textures and colors of this bouquet... I brake for dusty miller), a button for Meiko (another musician I love), pink double-faced satin ribbon from our wedding and guinea feathers that I eventually want to use to make a hair pin.

Close-up of the bottom left. Clipping from an old bridal magazine of a candy buffet that makes my teeth and heart hurt! A print out of art work by Tadahiro Uesugi, one of my favorite illustrators. I would cover all of my walls with his work if I could.

Hope you are inspired to create one of your own!!

I LOVE your inspiration board! My favorites are Priscilla Ahn's album cover (lurve her) and the Tadahiro Uesugi print. And of course that giganto pink poof flower. So lovely!

Love this post, Nancy! I've been meaning to make an inspiration board for the office I've yet to put together. This made me feel like I really need to get my ass into gear asap! Haha.

I'm loving your boards! So true about right-clicking to save images. I have a flash drive and desktop on my laptop computer in total disarray not to mention boxes (yes, boxes...I'm a pack rat) of magazines that need to be raided. This post gives me some ideas too!

YAY! SO happy to hear that my board is inspiring to others! It is actually not leading up to any one particular project. I just have it up on my wall to inspire me daily and switch things out periodically. :) love you all for dropping by! Thanks!!

OH! And for those of you who are talking about this encouraging you to get your stuff in order... umm... don't even ask to look at the rest of my room! I was very careful to take a picture of the board ONLY! Sometimes I feel like I am still living out of boxes! I swear I need an office. ;)

I'm having a lot of fun gathering color inspiration for my wedding. I like to browse flower bouquet images currently, since I'm having a garden wedding. If only the timing worked better and we could have a fall wedding I'd be looking at autumn leaves and chocolate. Flowers are fat free though, so that's an added benefit to a garden theme.
